Welcome to A.I. Lab
On April 9 in Beijing, representatives of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the company Sugon signed an agreement on scientific research cooperation, the result of which will be the establishment of a joint laboratory for high-performance computing in Ljubljana.
The ceremonial signing of the agreement marking the beginning of multi-year cooperation between Slovenian and Chinese scientists in the field of supercomputing took place at the headquarters of Sugon, the largest manufacturer of supercomputers in Asia. The Slovenian delegation, led by Alenka Suhadolnik, Director-General for Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the company as part of the 13th meeting of the Slovenian-Chinese Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation.
As part of the cooperation, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science will develop a software system for pattern discovery (i.e., data mining ) in large volumes of data, such as biological sequencing data, biomedical images, and climate data from computer simulations. “For this purpose, the globally recognized Orange Data Mining system, which we developed at the faculty, will be upgraded,” explained Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomaž Curk, Vice Dean for Research at UL FRI and one of the signatories of the agreement, after the working meeting. The Chinese industry partner is Sugon, while on the Slovenian side it is the company Arctur.
Academician Prof. Dr. Ivan Bratko presented a proposal for long-term cooperation to a high representative of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which will further strengthen the good cooperation and friendship between the two academies. This collaboration reached one of its peaks last June, when the President of CAS, Professor Bai Chunli, visited Slovenia.
