Welcome to A.I. Lab
In December 2025, Slovenia established the Competence Center for Artificial Intelligence (KCUI), which will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge, competencies, and technological solutions in artificial intelligence (AI) across the economy, research sphere, public sector, and wider society. As a key consortium partner, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana will be responsible for the professional leadership of the center.
The Competence Center will serve as the central entry point for access to knowledge, infrastructure, advisory services, training, and information in the field of artificial intelligence. Its purpose is to strengthen the competitiveness of the Slovenian innovation ecosystem and enable organizations, companies, and research institutions to move more quickly from research to the practical application of AI technologies.
Within KCUI, the key role of the University of Ljubljana (UL) lies in education, training, and consulting for the introduction of AI into companies and in solving their challenges in developing solutions that include AI. In addition to technical knowledge, we will also provide expertise in regulation and ethics. The Faculty of Computer and Information Science of UL will, in addition to professional leadership, take over the coordination of two work packages focused on knowledge transfer.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Vida Groznik, professional head of KCUI , explains the importance of the center: »The Competence Center for Artificial Intelligence will operate in a complementary way with other existing pillars that have already been established – with the European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) and especially with the Slovenian AI Factory. Through training and, above all, one-on-one consulting for companies, we want to help ensure a more effective transfer of knowledge and innovation in the field of AI into the economy.«
The establishment of KCUI is part of national efforts to create a comprehensive artificial intelligence ecosystem and represents the implementation of the goals of the National Program for Artificial Intelligence. Minister for Digital Transformation Ksenija Klampfer, M.Sc. said: »With the establishment of the Competence Center for Artificial Intelligence, Slovenia is putting in place the final pillar to support the creation of a comprehensive national AI ecosystem. The center will be a key connecting point between knowledge, the economy, and the public sector, and will enable a faster, safe, and responsible transfer of artificial intelligence into practice.«
The activities of the consortium of partners in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and innovation will be coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, which will also be responsible for transferring knowledge and technologies into the economy. The consortium will also include the University of Ljubljana (Faculty of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Law), the Jožef Stefan Institute, the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia, the University of Maribor, the University of Primorska, the University of Nova Gorica, and the ASEF Institute for Education and Research.
