The launch of the Artificial Intelligence Factory (SLAIF), one of Slovenia’s most important national initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, will be marked by an افتتاح opening event on February 9 at the Grand Plaza Hotel.

The Slovenian Artificial Intelligence Factory is establishing an ecosystem that will provide users from companies, research organizations, and the public sector with key services for the development of artificial intelligence in one place. The total value of the project is 135 million euros , co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European EuroHPC Joint Undertaking program.

The role of the University of Ljubljana in the adoption of artificial intelligence

With its half-century tradition in artificial intelligence, the University of Ljubljana will play an important role in delivering training and consulting for users with different levels of prior knowledge. Through the factory, it will offer companies, research organizations, and the public sector solutions developed through long-term research, and assist in establishing a foundational AI platform, preparing and evaluating prototype solutions, and effectively using the upcoming supercomputer.

The Basic Artificial Intelligence Platform work package , led by the University of Ljubljana, maintains a semantic catalog of datasets, models, workflows, and tools. Through it, users will be able to efficiently search for building blocks for the AI applications they develop. The package will also develop core workflows focused on key areas: green transition, digital society, health and biotechnology, and science. Through consulting, the factory will help users adapt these workflows to their specific needs, including the preparation and evaluation of prototype products. Through activities in this work package, the University of Ljubljana will significantly contribute to the faster and more effective transfer of artificial intelligence solutions into everyday use, thereby supporting innovation at the national level, said Prof. Dr. Uroš Lotrič , head of the work package and SLAIF coordinator at the University of Ljubljana.

Education as the foundation for working with artificial intelligence

Education is of key importance within the Slovenian Artificial Intelligence Factory, as it will contribute to the democratization of supercomputing use and the implementation of new AI services in the Slovenian economy. In the Education work package , led by the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, there will be several types of training: from individual lectures, 4–8 hour workshops and tailored consulting to comprehensive training programs in the form of micro-credentials.

For educational institutions , the SLAIF project is of particular importance, as it will help establish and strengthen bridges between industry and the academic sector. We believe that through training and services from other work packages, we will be able to equip Slovenian industry with the latest technologies and knowledge that will enable them to achieve new breakthroughs more effectively in global markets, said Assist. Prof. Dr. Vida Groznik , head of the education work package.
