This year’s President’s Forum on artificial intelligence is largely shaped by experts from FRI, building on 50 years of AI research in Slovenia. Experts, decision-makers, researchers, and business representatives gathered today at Brdo pri Kranju to learn about the current state of AI and the necessary steps for the successful implementation of the technology in practice.

The forum began in a somewhat unusual way, as the attendees were addressed by the President through a video message that turned out to be a deepfake with a convincing voice and image of the President. It was created for the event by Vid Klopčič from the Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Multimedia at FRI. Naturally, this was done with the consent of the President of the Republic, Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar, who appeared live after the deepfake message to address the participants herself and emphasize the importance of investing in AI and introducing appropriate education in schools.

Address by the special rapporteur of the President’s Forum, Assist. Prof. Dr. Vida Groznik

The special rapporteur of the forum was Assist. Prof. Dr. Vida Groznik, who immediately after the President’s address presented the course of the event and moderated the opening panel on the state of AI in Slovenia and worldwide. Prof. Dr. Danijel Skočaj, as the first panelist, gave a detailed presentation of the potential of AI and examples of successful solutions. During the discussion, Prof. Dr. Marko Robnik Šikonja warned participants about the importance of sufficient and stable funding.

PANEL: The State of Artificial Intelligence in Slovenia and Worldwide

In the continuation of the event, Prof. Dr. Blaž Zupan participated in the panel on education, warning about the complete absence of data and algorithmic literacy content in education at all levels. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andrej Brodnik also joined the discussion and highlighted that Slovenia is one of the very few countries without computer science in the school curriculum. President of the Republic Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar expressed serious concern after the presentation and clearly stated that these topics must be introduced into education as soon as possible.

At the conclusion of the event, the special rapporteur, Assist. Prof. Dr. Vida Groznik, summarized the discussion and presented recommendations that will be available in the form of a more extensive report. After the forum, the President of the Republic awarded the Golden Order of Merit to Acad. Prof. Dr. Ivan Bratko for his pioneering work in the field of artificial intelligence.
